Apprenticeships in Non‑Traditional Careers: Roles in Tech, Marketing, HR & Design

I have previously touched on apprenticeship myths in my blog 6 Myths About Apprenticeships – Busted, but one I didn’t mention is that when many people hear the word “apprenticeship,” it still conjures up images of hard hats, tool belts, and traditional trades like construction, plumbing, or engineering. While these remain fantastic and vital career paths, they only tell part of the story.

Today’s apprenticeships stretch far beyond the trades. From creative design studios to HR departments, marketing teams, and cutting-edge tech firms, there’s a growing number of non-traditional industries welcoming apprentices, and it’s about time we talked about them.

Why These Apprenticeships Matter

Apprenticeships in fields like marketing, HR, design, and IT are a game-changer. They offer hands-on experience in industries that have historically relied on degrees, unpaid internships, or a “who you know” network to get your foot in the door.

With these pathways, learners can:

  • Earn while they learn
  • Gain real experience on live projects
  • Build industry-relevant portfolios
  • Avoid student debt
  • Get a nationally recognised qualification

Employers benefit too! They get motivated, skilled team members who are trained with the organisation’s needs in mind.

Tech & IT Apprenticeships

Forget the stereotype of coders in basements, tech apprenticeships are growing fast across industries.

Typical roles:

  • IT Support Technician (Level 3) (This was my apprenticeship)
  • Software Developer (Level 4)
  • Cybersecurity Technician (Level 4)
  • Digital & Technology Solutions Professional (Level 6)

Who it suits:
People who enjoy problem-solving, logical thinking, or working with systems and software. No computer science degree needed! Soft skills are very much sought after in these areas – especially for the IT Support Technician apprenticeship!

Creative & Design Apprenticeships

Creativity and apprenticeships? Absolutely.

Typical roles:

  • Junior Content Producer (Level 3)
  • Graphic Designer (Level 3/4)
  • Broadcast Production Assistant (Level 3)
  • Visual Effects Technician (Level 4)

Who it suits:
Anyone with a creative eye who wants to gain experience in fast-paced environments like media, marketing, or design agencies; and build a real portfolio along the way.

Marketing & Communications Apprenticeships

Digital marketing is one of the UK’s fastest-growing apprenticeship sectors.

Typical roles:

  • Digital Marketer (Level 3)
  • Marketing Executive (Level 4)
  • PR & Communications Assistant (Level 4)
  • Content Creator (Level 3)

Who it suits:
Those with strong communication skills, an interest in social media or branding, and a curious mind for data and audience behaviour.

HR, L&D & People-Focused Roles

You don’t need to “start in recruitment” to break into HR anymore.

Typical roles:

  • HR Support (Level 3)
  • Learning & Development Practitioner (Level 5)
  • Coach or Mentor (Level 4)
  • Organisational Change Specialist (Level 6)

Who it suits:
People who are passionate about wellbeing, growth, inclusion, and supporting others to thrive at work.

Other Surprising Areas

Did you know you can also find apprenticeships in:

  • Law
  • Finance
  • Environment & Sustainability
  • Policy & Government
  • Social Media Management
  • UX Design
  • Animation
  • Charity & Nonprofit roles

The options are wider than you might think,  and they’re growing every year.

Final Thought: Your Route Doesn’t Have to Be “Typical”

Whether you’re creative, analytical, people-focused, or somewhere in between, there’s likely an apprenticeship that fits your interests, and not all of them require hard hats or steel-toed boots.

Apprenticeships are evolving. It’s time our understanding of them did too.
